5 Causes of Flat Tires and How to Prevent Them

prevent flat tiresIt’s an inevitable occurrence as an owner of a vehicle – at some point, we will all get a flat tire. If we are lucky, we get flat tires when we aren’t on the road or have to be somewhere. This isn’t always the case, and driving with a flat in bad weather or an unfamiliar area can be dangerous. Regularly repairing your tires and maintaining them can help prevent unexpected flats. Here are five other causes of flats and how to prevent them.

1. Over-Inflated Tires

When you over-inflate your tires, it often causes them to burst. Oftentimes over-inflated tires can lead to a blowout on the road, putting yourself, your passengers, and other drivers on the road in danger. This issue with tires is even more the case with lightning-fast European supercars, which are many times faster than everyday vehicles. All tires have proper PSI labeled on them. If you are unsure about what the PSI number is or how to check your tire pressure, consult your auto technician immediately.

2. Wear and Tear

Regular wear and tear is an unavoidable aspect of driving. However, your tires will wear faster and unevenly if you drive on bad pavements or through potholes. You can prevent further wear and tear on your tires by keeping your wheel in proper alignment, maintaining proper tire pressure, and avoiding stop and go if possible.

3. Leaky Valve Stem

If your tire keeps deflating but you can’t identify the cause, many times it is because of your leaky valve stem. Checking all valve stems should be a part of all inspections and regular maintenance on your car. If it isn’t, be sure to tell your automotive technician to do so.

4. Sharp Objects

All different kinds of sharp objects threaten your vehicle’s tires. Glass, nails, and all kinds of other dangerous objects can appear on roadways without us seeing them. Many of these sharp objects are too small to see before it’s too late. Preventing sharp objects from appearing on the road isn’t usually possible. However, we can always avoid driving over potentially puncturing debris, such as appearing in parking lots, for example.

5. Bad Road Conditions

Bad road conditions wreak havoc on vehicles. Potholes, roads that are uneven and debris will impact your car’s suspension and could lead to costly tire repair. A way we can prevent this is by driving safely and defensively – by always keeping a safe length from the car in front of you and avoiding potholes.
